Why Online Reading Fundraisers Are Replacing Traditional Product Sales

Yvonne Brooks July 27, 2026 2 minutes read

For decades, school fundraisers meant one thing: catalogs. Wrapping paper, cookie dough, magazines, candy bars — families filled out order forms, handled cash, and hoped the unsold inventory wouldn’t pile up in the garage. That model is fading fast, and schools across the country are shifting toward something simpler, safer, and far more profitable: reading-based fundraising that happens entirely online.

What’s Driving the Shift

The biggest reason schools are moving away from product sales is friction. Selling wrapping paper or popcorn tins requires inventory management, door-to-door visits, and awkward asks to extended family and neighbors. Online reading fundraisers remove almost all of that. Students simply read, log their minutes or books, and invite sponsors to support their progress with a few clicks — no boxes to haul, no unsold stock to return.

Profitability is another major factor. Traditional product fundraisers typically return a modest percentage of total sales back to the school after covering the cost of goods, shipping, and vendor fees. Online reading fundraisers cut out the middleman entirely, so a much larger share of every dollar raised goes directly to the school’s programs and classrooms.

There’s also the volunteer burden to consider. Product-based fundraisers often require dozens of parent volunteers to sort inventory, collect money, and manage distribution day. Reading fundraisers run largely on autopilot once they’re set up, freeing up PTO and PTA volunteers to focus on other priorities instead of logistics.

Finally, there’s the experience itself. Kids don’t get excited about selling things to relatives — but they do get excited about earning rewards for reading, competing in friendly class challenges, and watching their progress add up in real time. That enthusiasm translates directly into stronger participation and higher totals raised.

Conclusion

The takeaway is simple: schools want fundraisers that are easier to run, safer for families, and more profitable overall, and product sales increasingly can’t compete on any of those fronts. As more PTOs and PTAs discover what a well-run online reading fundraiser can do, the shift away from catalogs and door-to-door sales is only going to accelerate. As more schools rethink what school fundraising should look like, the case for moving online only gets stronger.
