What to Expect When Bringing Home Your Cavachon Puppy

Yvonne Brooks August 20, 2026 3 minutes read

Bringing home a new puppy is one of the most exciting milestones a family can share, and preparing well makes all the difference. The first few days set the tone for your entire relationship, so knowing what to expect ahead of time can turn a chaotic transition into a smooth, joyful one.

Every puppy adjusts a little differently, but most new owners go through the same broad stages: a wobbly first day or two, a settling-in period as routines take hold, and then a steady climb toward confidence over the following weeks. Knowing what’s typical at each stage helps you tell the difference between normal puppy jitters and something that actually needs attention.

Settling In: The First Few Days and Weeks

The First Few Days

Your puppy’s first days at home are all about comfort and routine. Expect some whining or restlessness the first night or two — this is completely normal as your puppy adjusts to a new environment away from littermates. Ask the breeder for a small blanket or toy that carries familiar scents, since it can be remarkably soothing during those early nights. Keep the first week low-key: limit visitors, stick to a predictable schedule, and give your puppy plenty of quiet time to decompress.

House-Training and Daily Routine

Consistency is everything when it comes to house-training. Take your Cavachon puppy outside first thing in the morning, after every meal, after naps, and right before bed, praising immediately when they go in the right spot. Cavachons are generally quick learners, but accidents will happen — patience and a consistent schedule matter far more than any single mistake. A predictable daily rhythm for feeding, potty breaks, and play also helps your puppy feel secure faster.

Socialization, Bonding, and Early Health Care

Once your puppy has settled in, gentle exposure to new people, sounds, and experiences helps build a confident, well-adjusted adult dog. Short, positive interactions work best — a few new sights or sounds a day go much further than overwhelming your puppy all at once. Don’t forget to schedule an early vet visit to start vaccinations and confirm a clean bill of health.

Conclusion

The first few weeks with a new puppy can feel like a whirlwind, but a little preparation goes a long way toward making the transition smooth for everyone involved. Stock up on essentials beforehand — a crate, appropriately sized food, a few sturdy chew toys, and a leash and collar — so your first days together are about bonding rather than last-minute errands. Stay patient, keep a consistent routine, and give your puppy time to adjust at their own pace. Before long, the sleepless nights and house-training hiccups will fade into memory, replaced by a loyal, loving companion who feels right at home.
