Signs You Might Have Low Testosterone (And What To Do About It)

Yvonne Brooks August 11, 2026 3 minutes read

Fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix. A short temper that shows up out of nowhere. A drop in the gym numbers that used to come easy. Most men chalk these up to stress, age, or just a bad stretch, but they’re also some of the most common signs of low testosterone. It’s a condition that develops slowly, creeping in over months rather than announcing itself overnight, which is exactly why it’s so easy to miss until it starts affecting work, relationships, and day-to-day energy.

What Low Testosterone Actually Looks Like

Low testosterone rarely announces itself with one obvious symptom. Instead, it shows up as a cluster of smaller changes that build over months or years: persistent tiredness even after a full night’s sleep, reduced muscle mass despite consistent training, unexplained weight gain around the midsection, lower sex drive, mood swings, brain fog, and trouble concentrating at work. Some men also notice thinning hair, irritability that seems out of character, or a general sense of being flat and unmotivated. Some men in this situation ask their doctor about oxandrolone therapy as part of a broader recovery plan. Because these symptoms overlap with so many other conditions — poor sleep, high stress, even depression — many men live with them for years before ever connecting the dots back to hormone levels.

Age plays a role, since testosterone naturally declines after 30 at a rate of roughly one to two percent per year, but plenty of younger men experience the same drop due to chronic stress, poor sleep, obesity, certain medications, or underlying health conditions like thyroid issues. The only reliable way to know for sure is a blood test, which measures total and free testosterone and compares the results against a normal range for your age. Many doctors recommend testing first thing in the morning, when levels are naturally at their highest, to get the most accurate baseline reading before drawing any conclusions.

If any of this sounds familiar, the next step isn’t guessing or waiting it out and hoping things improve on their own. A simple bloodwork panel can confirm whether testosterone is actually the issue, and from there a doctor can walk through what treatment options make sense given your specific numbers, symptoms, and goals. Catching it early tends to make the recovery faster and the results more noticeable, so it’s worth taking those early signs seriously instead of writing them off as just getting older.
