Loaches are some of the most fascinating additions you can make to a freshwater aquarium — active, often social, and endlessly entertaining to watch as they patrol the substrate and explore every corner of the tank. But not all loaches are created equal, and choosing the right species for your setup takes more than picking whichever one looks interesting at the store. Tank size, temperament, and long-term care requirements all vary significantly between species. Here’s what to consider before adding loaches to your aquarium.
What to Look for Before Adding Loaches to Your Aquarium
Most loaches need more space than beginners expect. Many species, like clown loaches, can grow surprisingly large and require tanks of 55 gallons or more once fully mature, while smaller species like kuhli loaches can thrive in tanks starting around 20 gallons. Nearly all loaches appreciate a soft, sandy substrate that won’t damage their sensitive barbels, along with plenty of hiding spots — driftwood, rocks, and caves let them retreat and feel secure, especially during the day when many species are less active.
Loaches are sensitive to water quality and do best in a well-cycled tank with stable parameters and consistent maintenance. Most are omnivorous scavengers that will happily clean up leftover food, but they still need a varied diet of sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein like bloodworms to stay healthy. Because they spend most of their time near the substrate, it’s worth watching feeding closely to make sure food actually reaches them before faster fish eat it all.
